Once electricity is generated and enters the power network, the goal is to ‘balance’ the network, ensuring supply and demand are matched second by second. The more this balance is precise, the more distribution quality is high.
This job is getting harder and harder due to the increasing number of input and output points. To correctly manage this bidirectional energy flows over kilometers of lines is absolutely necessary to have a structured and precise metering infrastructure.
Moreover, thanks to different communication channels, a “Smart” meter involve a real-time monitoring of consumption, providing the exact time of when the energy is consumed. This allows to achieve:
- A better balance of the network, having more control on production and consumption data
- A precise billing information (introducing even different prices based on time slots)
- Greater visibility of losses along the lines, both technical and non-technical
